PEAK SHIPPING SEASON 2026: 4 KEY CHALLENGES FOR SEAFOOD IMPORTERS SOURCING FROM VIETNAM

The global container shipping market entered June 2026 with clear signs of tightening capacity as freight rates increased sharply across major trade routes. According to data cited by VASEP from Drewry, the World Container Index (WCI) rose by 23% during the first week of June, marking the strongest increase since the beginning of the year.

The increase varies by trade lane, but the overall trend indicates tightening capacity and upward pressure on logistics costs across major shipping routes.

As the peak shipping season arrives earlier than usual, seafood importers sourcing from Vietnam may face growing challenges related to logistics costs, vessel space availability, shipment reliability, and inventory planning.

    Rising Freight and Logistics Costs

Higher freight rates, peak season surcharges (PSS), and fuel-related expenses are increasing overall logistics costs. For frozen seafood products, transportation remains a key component of the total landed cost, making cost management increasingly important for importers.

Limited Vessel Space During Peak Season

According to Alphaliner, the global idle fleet currently represents only around 0.6% of total container capacity. As demand continues to increase, early booking is recommended, particularly for shipments moving during peak demand periods or requiring specialized reefer equipment, particularly during the peak shipping months of Q3.

    Growing Risk of Shipment Delays

Port congestion at several major gateways and ongoing supply chain disruptions continue to affect schedule reliability. While shipping performance has improved compared to previous years, delays remain a concern for importers relying on consistent inventory replenishment.

    Increased Pressure on Inventory Planning

Longer transit times and ongoing shipping disruptions are creating additional pressure on inventory planning for seafood importers. Early purchasing, advance bookings, and reliable supply partners are becoming increasingly important to minimize logistics risks. For seafood importers, proactive purchasing plans and close coordination with suppliers and logistics partners will be essential during the coming months.
