(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first two months of 2018, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the Polish market increased by 17 times over the same period last year. This was considered as a notable importing market of Vietnam in the EU in the first two months of this year.
Like many other markets in Europe, Vietnam pangasius has to compete strongly with other whitefish products such as frozen Alaska pollock fillets (HS code 030475); frozen cod (HS code 030363); frozen hake fillets (HS 030474) in the Polish market.
According to ITC statistics, in 2017, whitefish imports into Poland rose by 19% over the previous year. In particular, imports of fresh/chilled cod (HS code 030251) increased by 163%, those of pangasius also increased by 7% compared to 2016. However, cod imports accounted for 48% of total import value while imports of frozen pangasius fillets (HS code 030462) accounted for only 3.82 of total imports.
The Polish market is a new option for many Pangasius exporters of Vietnam in early 2018. According to ITC statistics, in 2017, the average import price of pangasius into this country fluctuated from US$1.55 to US$1.62 per kg.
All the pangasius products exported to the Polish market are frozen fish fillets. While pangasius exports to the EU faced difficulties, a rise in the export value to some new potential markets such as Poland has shown the efforts of pangasius exporters of Vietnam.
