Seafood Expo Asia is a trade event where buyers and suppliers of seafood from around the world come together to network and conduct business in the lucrative Asia markets. According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), by the end of November 2023, Vietnam's pangasius exports reached nearly 1.7 billion USD, down 26% over the same period last year. The average price of pangasius exports decreased in main markets, especially the US and China, pulling the value of pangasius exports lower than in 2022.
Accordingly, in January 2024, seafood exports increased by 64% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 750 million USD: shrimp increased by 71%, pangasius increased by 97%, tuna increased by 57%, BT squid increased by 45%, other types of fish increased by 50%

By the end of October 2022, pangasius exports is forecast to earn nearly 2.2 billion USD in foreign currency, an increase of 80% compared to the same period in 2021. Of which, the Chinese market alone accounted for 30% with about 654 million USD, up 110%.

The export growth rate over the same period last year was also the lowest. By the end of October, Vietnam pangasius exports reached 2.1 billion USD, up 75% compared to the same in 2021.

However, looking at the export performance in September, we can see that inflation has strongly hit all food and seafood industries, not excluding pangasius.

Particularly in May, 2019, pangasius export value to this market hiked up: 144,7% compare to the same period in 2018. By the end of May, 2019, the export value of Vietnamese pangasius exported to Germany reached USD14.7 million, up 74.6% compared to the same period in 2018.
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the context of an effective Vietnam-EU Trade Agreement (EVFTA), shrimp is one of the seafood products benefiting from tariff preferences of this Agreement. However, joining the Agreement also poses many challenges for export enterprises.
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Q.IV/2018, Pangasius export revenue to ASEAN markets reached US$57 million, up 35.6% compared to the same period in 2017. In 2018, the export turnover of pangasius to this market reached US$202.6 million, up 41.5% for which the 3 largest single export markets were: Thailand increased by 48.8%; Singapore increased by 20.7% and the Philippines increased by 32.1%.
Vietnam sets a target of earning 4.1-4.2 billion USD from shrimp exports this year, higher than 3.6 billion USD recorded in 2018, according to the Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD). The figure was released at a conference to launch production and business plans for the domestic shrimp industry in 2019 that was held on March 13 by MARD in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang, one of large shrimp producers in the country.

Specifically, in July, exports fell by 20.3% over the same period last year; sales to most of major importing markets fell sharply.

However, thanks to the growth of 20% in QI, the figure in the first half of this year slightly increased by 5.1% to see US$1.6 billion. With higher import demand in Apr-Jun this year and steady shrimp prices, Vietnam’s shrimp sales this year expected to total US$4 billion.
(vasep.com.vn) After 10 years implementing the Resolution No 26-NQ/TW on agriculture, rural areas, farmers (2008 - 2018), Vietnam seafood export turnover doubled. In particular, shrimp exports accounted for the largest proportion and strongest and the most stable growth. After 10 years, shrimp export turnover increased nearly 2.5 times from $1.6 billion to nearly $3.9 billion, with an average annual growth of 9%. Shrimp exports account for a increasing share of total seafood exports: from 36% to over 50%.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has asked People’s Committees of cities and provinces with large areas of shrimp farms to employ different solutions in order to reach targets set in the national action plan for the development of the shrimp industry through 2025.

Of that, exports in QII increased by 52% over QI, exports in QIII increased by 25% over QII and 90% over QI. (seafood.vasep.com.vn) After the slump in QI/2017, Vietnam’s shrimp exports in QII/2017 inched up 28.2% to eye US$938.9 million. Thanks to the good growth in Apr-Jun 2017, Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the first half of 2017 gained US$1.6 billion, up 15.2% over the same period in 2016.

Shipments to top 8 leading markets witnessed the good growth, except for the U.S (-5.5%). (seafood.vasep.com.vn) Shrimp imports into the EU accounts for about 30.6% of total worldwide imports, ranging from US$6-8 billion per year. In the past 10 years (2007-2016), shrimp imports into the bloc increased from US$5.6 billion to US$6.7 billion in 2016. The export value bottomed out at US$5.4 billion in 2009 and reached a peak US$7,6 billion in 2014.
Vietnam earned 1.56 billion USD from shrimp exports in the first half of this year, up 15.7 percent annually, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP).
Up to 110 small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) of Vietnam attended a conference in Singapore on March 10 to seek trade and investment partnership.  The businesses’ participation benefited from an initiative jointly made by the Vietnam-Singapore Friendship Association, the Vietnamese Embassy in Singapore and the Vietnamese Entrepreneurs’ Club under the Vietnamese Association of Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises.

In 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius was destined to 137 markets around the world, including the US (with the largest share of 23%), China (17%) and the EU (slipped to the 3rd rank with the share of 16%).
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to the Ca Mau Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province expected to raise certified organic shrimp farming area to 20,000 ha by 2020. Currently, the province has about 14,000 hectares of mixed shrimp-forest farming with participation of 2,500 households in the two districts of Ngoc Hien and Nam Can and shrimp products in these districts were internationally certified organic. This is also the opportunity to promote the brand name of Ca Mau’s shrimp on the world market.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam shrimp exports to EU in Jan 2016 continued the downward trend of 2015. Exports in the next months of Feb and Apr started to post the year-on-year growth. Vietnam shrimp sales to EU in Jan-Apr 2016 reached US$164.4 million, up 12.1% year on year. In the early 2016, orders from European importers rose thanks to lower inventories and stable demand.
